This is a scan of a shot I took in southern Alaska about 13 years ago. The next shot shows the impact of the Humpback hitting the water. This was a hand-held shot off of a boat well before IS/VR with my old Sigma that I have since sold. I remember watching these whales breech like it was yesterday.

Nikon 8008, Sigma 400 mm f/5.6

Simply smashing! :) Love the lines of water down the back. Gotta ask what's the brown and white spot just to the right of the whale's head?

Nice one Steve. I did a week long photo trip to shoot humpbacks in AK about 5 years ago be we had no breaching at all-just a lot of different feeding behaviours. Thanks for sharing.

The brown and white spot could be kelp but I'm not 100% sure.
