Image shot a few years ago in November, during the rut, in Smoky Mountains N.P. The light was pretty low, so I was happy to get a decent image of this buck jumping the fence.
Canon EOS1V, Provia 100F pushed 1 stop, 100-400 IS.
Comments welcome.
Rich.

Nice motif contribution Rich. There is a pretty strong cyan cast in the whites. Thanks for posting.

Great timing; this really shows off the sleekness and capability of the deer! Judging from the lack of motion-blur, I'd have to say this was 1/1000th or faster. Impressive capture!

Would you mind my putting up a repost? The cyan cast can correct quite nicely.

Perfect timing Rich.. Really like the action. Correcting the cyan will also warm it up a titch.. Well done..

Great shot and timing. I agree with the cast and there also seems to be some noise present.

Thanks for your permission to repost a rework, Rich.

Sometimes the subject material in a photo is just so good - or unlikely to be obtained in a reshoot - that going to extra measures in Photoshop is warranted. Noise/grain reduction, limited selectively to the out of focus areas, and color balancing to reduce the cyan quite a bit yields a bit more natural-looking image in this case, with little downside:
Image
I've found that minimizing the noise in the background is key to making an image where the sharply focused subject virtually pops out at you, which in this case increases the impact, IMO.

I used my actions to speed things along, but an easy way to do selective noise/grain reduction in Photoshop is this (and I'm sure there are others, but this method works for me):

1. Duplicate the image as a second layer.
2. Make the top layer invisible for a moment by clicking off the eyeball.
3. Select the lower layer, then Filter - Noise - Median, say 3 or 4 pixels.
4. Click the eyeball back on for the top layer, and select the top layer.
5. Use the eraser tool with appropriate brushes to erase through parts of the upper layer and expose the smooth layer below.

Step 5 above could also be done with a layer mask. The effect either way is of "painting on" the noise reduction, and can even be done with partial opacity. That's key, because you don't want to remove all the grain - that would look fake - but just enough of it to lower it to be below the distraction level.

For the cyan cast, Image - Adjust - Color Balance can do most of the work though I found I had to desaturate Cyans some in this case because they were simply so strong in the light areas.

Hope this helps! Thanks for posting such a beautiful image to tweak. :)
