African Lion - (c) Phoenix, Arizona, USA
EOS 1D, 400mm, 2x, 1/100 @ f/11, ISO 200

Some of you may have seen this shot before elsewhere as I posted it shortly after Papago, the male African Lion at the Phoenix Zoo, succumbed to cancer about a year ago. Every morning you could hear his powerful roar throughout the zoo. It was a sad day when he died. I captured this shot a few months before his death after he had already been diagnosed and you can almost see the pain in his face. His mate of many years was quite depressed for several months but in recent times, you can occasionally hear her roar now as her life goes on.

Excellent portrait EJ. I remember it from the first posting. It has a lot of impact and it is not hard to imagine the look on his face is one of pain.

I am loving all these cats! A beautiful tribute to Papago. It isn't quite the same at the zoo without him roaring.

Touching image - you can practically see it in his eyes.

This is such a stunning shot E.J. I remember it well, and seeing that tortured expression on this beautiful cat just makes my eyes fill up all over again.

To have captured the emotion so well that it has that effect on me takes a very special talent.

love the full frame head shot. nice colors and texture. his expression does convey a certain sense of anguish and pain. great capture.
