Here's the press release on Canon's new Pro 1 8Mp P&S. It has a 28-300 F2.4-3.5 L series lens...

This is cool and might just make that perfect traveling companion when packing space is an issue.

Absolutely....I was in the market for a 70-200 lens, but this might make a better option, as it can also be a backup camera with exceptional macro capabilities :D

Interesting, but I think there is still more to come from Canon this week.....maybe :D

Edit: here's another link to it on the dpreview web site, includes lots of pics....

... if you mean a bunch of p&s cameras, a new large format pigment printer, a faster 8 ink wide carriage 13x19 inkjet, a new Elan film body(2 actually, one has eye control), and more IS binocular additions then your right.

If not there is always Photokina in the fall for the more anticipated updates.

Neat Camera. Yes it would be great for a backup and for light packing. Does anyone know what the price will be on this little gem?

MSRP is US $999 so I'm thinking you will be able to pick one up for around $800.

The claims are very high and Canon has an excellent reputation. This new P&S is in the same class as the
Sony (has had excellent reviews) with one big difference. Third party raw conversion.

I currently have a Canon S-50 which I use for grab shots and the results have been great. This new one is much bulkier so I don't think it can replace the S-50. Wonder how far will they go? A point and shoot 600 f4?

I hate to say it, but this will likely be my next camera. Let's hope this one lives up to the marketing hype. The thought of L glass in an all-in-one camera is just what I was looking for!

Apart from a number of other more portable P&S and Canon Pro1 mentioned here, there would be another "prosumer" grade :o digital camera Canon S1 IS which has IS with streaming movie capability (i.e. the length of the movie is limited by the amount of memory installed), at 640x480 @30fps, whilst AF, AWB and zoom are all operatable. 8)

OTOH, Nikon has just posted a disappointing result, blaming a drop in camera sales. Now Canon is flooding us with digital cameras....

Specs from Canon say 5mp raw. 8mp JPEG. Doesn't make sense. Maybe a typo? Also USB 1.1 is the only connectivity. Hopefully, not true.

Dan,

I think that the 5MP RAW mode is only for the "super" macro mode below 10cm. Otherwise the literature I've seen backs up the normal 8MP RAW file size.
