Outstanding. I am sure someone will comment on the tail being tight at the edge, but I will not do so.

Great first post. Very nice action shot with excellent DOF throughout. Heather has grown since I shot her in 2001. Besides the tail a little more space in front for her to run into would be nice but this is very good as is. Did you use fill flash? What f-stop? Many of us do care about equipment and specs as they help us learn. I hope you have more shots from Turpentine Creek to share. Thanks for posting in Wildlife and welcome to NSN.

Thanks for commenting Cheryl!

More details of the shot - f5.6 @ 1/1600th, 135mm, ISO 200 to get the full dynamic range of the 1D sensor.

We took her out to the river before dawn and she got to play as the sun came up, hence all natural light (no fill flash).

I've got a few more shots I'll be posting, but the rules state one image per 24 hours per forum.

Thanks for the welcome also. I used to lurk (never posted) over at NPN and really enjoyed your images. A guy I sold a lens to tonight just turned me on to this site and I figured "What the heck, let's see what they think."

Thanks...glad you didn't comment on the tail ;)

Further details, this image was cropped at the right and bottom as well. Of course as everyone sees, I should have had more room at the top and left! Figures... it was my first shoot with the camera and lens after upgrading from the D30 and I was fumbling with controls more than concentrating on composition...

Not enough room for the tail? Who cares! The timing, with that wonderful splash, and both paws out of the water combined with that intense expression all serve to captivate the viewer at the front of the cat. I didn't even notice the tail until it was pointed out.

Wonderful shot! Just as it is!

One more welcome - as I work my way through some older images. Love the paws out of the water and the splash. Great timing. Also love the water coming off the tail. If the tightness at the top was a bother, it wouldn't be that difficult to clone in a dozen pixels all the way across.

Rich
