Having just received a new Canon 550EX, I've noticed that after the initial charge, it "beeps" about once every 5 seconds. I assume this is a quick top-up of the flash (the beep sounds like a quick recharge). Is this correct?

Thanks.

Yup, the capacitors that hold the charge have a dissipation rate. there is a circuit that detects when the charge is below a certain threshold which then triggers a charge top-off.

I actually studied Comp Eng at UNSW (Sydney, Aust), but there was a fair bit of EE in the mix :).
