I wonder how you guys deal with noise in your photos. OK, obvious solution is to use noise stoppers for your ears, but that won't do with photos :D. I notice that the new scanner that my lab is using now, make really good job of picking up noise, especially in blue channel. I'll try some guasian blur in blue channel tonight while working on some images with very noticeable grain. But I think that this action will result in too much blur to the whole photo.

BDW: are noise reduction programs and plug-ins worth the money?

Thank you for your time

I don't own it but have seen some posts from Sandy Mossberg where he has used something called Noise Ninja and I have to say I was very impressed with the results.

I and several other people I know use Neatimage and find it quite impressive. I works well on digital noise and also on the grain in scanned images. Very easy to use, I run it as a Photoshop lug-in, but processor intensive. It takes around 30 seconds to filter an image on my relatively new and powerful PC. It is definitely worth the wait, however.

I never shoot with such high ISO's with my nature stuff to worry about it. With my journalism images I copy the image layer, run a gaussion blur at a low number until I see the speckled dots dissappear, then change the blend mode to color and flatten the image. All noise reduction programs will reduce the overall sharpness and this technique works good enough for those critical shots. There are other techniques that require more steps and that may be a bit better but that is my standby.

Marko, Noise Ninja is so good and so rapid that it has become part of my workflow with images taken above ISO 250. Even though the PS plug-in version is not yet available, I simply leave Noise Ninja open whenever I am in post-production. It seems to work best when you employ NO noise reduction in your RAW converter.

I use NeatImage and find that it is wonderful. I use the rough noise analyzer most of the time and find that it works just fine. It isn't fast but it does not effect the sharpness of the detailed portion of the image.
I alway run it last, after sharpening with FocalBlade.

Thank you for your time folks. I just downloaded the free version of NeatImage to see what it can do.

Sandy, can you give me some more information on Noise Ninja? Please remember that I'm working with scanned images, not direct digital capture.
