I have been thinking of ways to take my photography to the next step so to speak and was wondering if it is common practice for Professionals to hire assistants to work with them in all aspects of their business. Heck, I would even volunteer my time with a Pro if I knew I could advance my photographic skills to the next level.

It is fairly common with commercial photographers who often have to work with multiple light setups, models etc. Seems much less common with nature photographers, but it never hurts to ask.

Ron has a good point. Most nature photographers don't do assignment work or big productions. They usually work solo and don't have a lot of logistics to deal with.
One exceptions though - pros conducting workshops will often appreciate help with logistics. If you approach someone at the right time they might let you tag along on a workshop in exchange for some assistance.

Well, If there are any pros out there willing to make that arrangement, all they need do is e-mail me and if my schedule allows I'm all over that.
