Nikon AF-S 80~200mm F:2.8D

I just got this lens and there are 3 buttons on the lens. Nikon has told me they are for distance compensation. I never heard of that. Nikon told me it was for using film in the "old" days. I need some help understating this.

I think they are Autofocus Lock buttons used for re-composing the scene after focusing with a single AF sensor.

In any case, they are focus hold buttons, in other words they interrupt AF allowing the lens focus to stay in one place when in AFC mode. This is useful for focus and recompose when using the shutter button to AF. If you are using rear button AF, they don't do much since you can stop AF just by removing your finger from the rear AF button.

That's a different lens - he's asking about the AF-S which has the buttons, this one doesn't.
