I have my D850 set up for back button focus.Tonight I was out taking landscape shots and had my Vello wired remote shutter release attached. The remote would take the shot but would not activate auto focus.

I have just switched to back button AF and love it so far. Is there any way to get the wired remote to activate AF without disabling the back button AF?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Check custom setting a8. I believe it is detailed on page 110 of the manual.
I believe setting Shutter/AF-on should do it.

That can't work Bruce. The button on the remote is a shutter button. Since you have AF decoupled from the shutter button, there is no way for the camera to know that you want it to focus. You have two options, the first being what SantaFeJoe above wrote, the second being that you initiate AF on the camera body via the back focus button first, then after you have achieved focus, remove your hand from the camera and trigger focus via the remote.
