While in Cap May last month I found this nice growth of Jack-O-Lantern fungus on a stump. I tried several angles and found this to be the most pleasing. Should I crop it a little tighter to remove the smaller caps at the top? Are they distracting?
EOS 1Ds, 180 mm macro at f/18, 1/125 sec with fill flash at a low angle to add some detail to the under side of the caps. In PS, levels USM and a slight crop.
Comments welcome and thanks,

I think your choice of composition works really well here!

I think the image is stronger with the top cropped to exclude the smaller caps, but good as is.

I agree with Chris- nice as is, but perhaps a bit better with the top portion cropped.

Good use of the flash to provide detail in the gills!

For me I think the composition as posted works very well and I would not crop it. Further, I do not find the upper caps to be distracting I think they complete the composition.

I don't think I would fiddle with a crop on this either. You've got a great composition going here withsort of a stairstep effect and I think taking some off the top it would look decapitated. I like those mushrooms at the top. Very rich tone to this and nice detail on the underside of those 'shrooms.

Concurring with the above opinions, did you check if these were edible? They look as if they would go great with a butter and spices sautee.
My mouth is watering. On the other hand, you would not want them to be the last supper.

ROFLOL Steve. They do look tasty but -
" Definition: [n] a large poisonous agaric with orange caps and narrow clustered stalks; the gills are luminescent

Synonyms: jack-a-lantern, jack-o-lantern, Omphalotus illudens

See Also: agaric, genus Omphalotus, Omphalotus "

Looks like it would be a last supper

In fact, I went back to this late at night to see if I could get a photo of them glowing. While I thought that I could see some bioluminescence coming from them I was unable to get a photo. My time trying this was cut short by rain

I like this one as is, without a crop. I think cutting off the top would take away its sense of place. This is a very nice image.

No, no, no, do not crop! :) The top zrooms lead the eye back to those little green plants which lead the eye to the front. This is wonderful!
