Finally dragged myself to a local park with an alluring waterway....unfortunately days of wet weather had caused the ground to be extremely waterlogged
(if thats the right term?) Mostly chasing dragonflies and missed the few seconds when a pair was in the mating position. :(

Here's an attempt at a portrait. Don't really like the reflective patches on the eye and the dof is not particularly convincing. But well, for what its worth......

1/200, f13, flash ETTL -2/3, flash no strong diffusion, 90D, 180Canon macro, handheld approach, cropped, Topaz denoise.

Comments welcomed and hope its interesting.

Quite the close-up. What a face. I like your title. Are the black dots eyes too? (My ignorance is showing!) I think you are too self-critical. :)

Hi Cynthia,
Googling around I extracted the following:
"...primary light sensing ocelli are placed. Ocelli (there are three of them) are simple eyes (i.e., not compound) are used to detect changes in light intensity and duration, not for visual acuity."
I also was not acquainted with such knowledge.;)
I try to critique myself to soften the blow of receiving others' critique. Lol

+1.  Fab shot Darren.  Not in a position to critique your knowledge so will just have to satisfy myself with enjoying the image.   8)

That close, DOF is going to be minimal. You nailed the eyes, showing the facets, and the face, and even the grasping feet are sharp. In short, it seems to me you did fantastic with what you had to work with.

And I’m not sure, but I think there are a couple of mites on the dragon’s face

I think you should be more than pleased with this Darren! I find these dragonflies fascinating - and this is a fine image.

Thanks Carol. These Dragons ( and Damsel flies too) are definitely great subjects for macro enthusiasts, myself included. :)

U're welcomed, Cynthia. I think I also need to brush up on
my insect knowledge. Besides being interesting, might also
help us understand their behaviours in the field better
and take better photos, hopefully.

The EP is such an honour. (and motivational fuel). Thank U!
