In a patch of sunflowers, I found a number of these amorous bugs. My first thought was "what are all these small milkweed bugs doing on sunflowers?" It turns out they are another species, false milkweed bug (Lygaeus turcicus), commonly found on the flower, false sunflower (probably Heliopsis helianthoides).
