Youssef's recent postings from this place inspired me to go back there yesterday afternoon. Here is the result. It is a digital combo of two exposures to handle the contrast range. I took the brighter shot first for the rocks and then waited for the perfect splash for the sky/splash exposure. I selected this splash out of about 30 frames of various waves.

As always, I appreciate honest critique, both positive and negative, so please hammer on! Reposts welcome.

Thanks for looking,

Anders

I like the calm/action in this image. Nice light and nice colors.

Well the first thing that struck me about this image is the similarity is shape between the big splash and the water foam in the foreground. I'm guessing that is a happy accident? It'd be cool if there was a little illumination on the splash but this is pretty just the way it is. I like Ken's comment about the action/calm all in the same image. Don't see that too often.

Mary,

I'm afraid I can't claim I had the similarity in shape in mind as I selected the splash. Possibly I did it unconciously as I went through the different shots of splash formations and selected this one, but I don't know.

I shot a few versions of this theme where the splash is backlit by the setting sun. Haven't seen yet if any of those are of posting quality though.

Thanks for the comments this far!

Anders, I really like this image as is but was struck by the downward curve of the rocks, the upward curve of the rocks, and the curve of the splash. They just seem to go together. I did a repost with a crop to emphasize those curves. Just another option. Hope you don't mind.

What impresses me most about this shot is the depth. There is a lot to look at here and some marvelous contrasts of the bright sky colors with the cool colors of the rocks and sea...also the contrasting elements of calmness and energy. I like the shot as you have presented it here. The rocks in the foreground provide a good anchor for the shot. If you wanted to dimish there importance, I might suggest the tiniest crop where the cropping line would be just below the rock on the left side of the frame, but it is great the way that it is too.

Jenny,

Thanks for the repost! It's funny, I had the urge to do the same when I shot this - switching to a longer lens. However, I almost always find myself working with longer lenses so I purposly forced myself to stay with the 24mm the whole evening, just for practise.

I like your version very much too.

I prefer the original crop as well because of the intriguing similarity between the crashing wave and the foam, as was noted earlier.

It's a very intriguing photo because of the storm/calm dichotomy.

I like both versions equally well and the effect of the contrast between smooth (sky, water) and violent (rocks, waves) adds interest to me.
