ZWO ASI 1600MM-C, TS Optics 8" Newtonian, ASA 0.73x Reducer, Astrodon Narrowband Filters, 90 second exposures, Gain 139

Ha 5nm Filter (80 exposures, 2 hours total)
Oiii 3nm Filter (93 exposures, 2.3 hours total)
Sii 5nm Filter (80 exposures, 2 hours total)

Total integration:  6.3 hours

The Soul Nebula is located within the constellation of Cassiopeia and estimated to be 6500 light years away.  This image is the eastern half of the Soul Nebula (IC 1848) and was imaged on October 10th and November 4th.

One of the benefits of imaging with a mono camera is that you have the ability to use filters to choose which part of the light spectrum you wish to expose for.  Common filters are Red, Green and Blue as well as Luminance which allow for the creation of natural color images.  Additionally, narrowband filters may also be used which dramatically restrict the band of the spectrum that will fall upon the sensor.

This image was created with a set of narrowband filters called HydrogenAlpha (HA), Oxygen (Oiii) and Sulfur (Sii).  I exposed each of these separately and combined them with a custom blend into the color channels of RGB to produce an image in HSO or Hubble Palette.

Fascinating; both photo and explanation. I thought I was on the Enterprise when I viewed your 'galaxy' gallery. Awesome stuff.

Jaw dropping as always Chris!

There is always so much to absorb in your amazing images, and the icing on the cake with this one is the soulful celestial face - so appropriate considering the title of this location.
