This was my third attempt at this and I hope to have a few more goes at it yet. It is a rather slow process, but that is part of the challenge.
Things to try next times;
-lens warmer to prevent that condensation on the lens.
-shoot closer to dusk/dawn to get some colour in the sky.
-moon/flash light on the FG veg.
-short exp to get stars, not trails.
-try to get the axis of rotation behind the head of the tree (moving the camera a few inches makes a huge difference).
That should keep me busy for a while.

120 minutes, give or take a few. A lot less would probably still have achieved the desired effect, saved some battery and allowed for more sleep.

Neil,

This is super cool. I really like your placement of the rotation axis. I think it is better where you have it than behind the tree. I would be happy to have shot this.

Bob

PS. Try this with a view camera and you won't have to worry about the 2C5R Battery :D

This is well composed and you should follow up with the techniques you set forth for other images. One of them might not work, I think if you have a moon out, the sky will wash out in such a long exposure (but you definitely can valk around and flash the scene a few times). Very good.

This is freakin' awesome dude  :D

I tried something similar in Africa last year but as I was shooting film, didn't realise it hadn't worked well 'til we got back. This year we're digital though

Good work Neil.
Don't you have an old manual SLR that you can use for this type of work?
You wouldn't have battery problems that way.

I do have an old Pentax with 50mm lens growing fungus. I guess I could get an old clean 24mm for it but I'd rather use it as en excuse to get something like a 1V which i believe uses little or no power to hold the shutter open.
Thanks for all the comments :D

Wow, someone else uses an old Canon EOS 100, besides me! Never taken anything this good with it though; fabulous shot!
