When registering composite photographs, such as panos or focus stacked, with the copyright office do you
need to register each individual photo of a set or just the resulting composite or both?

Generally, if you don't plan to display or distribute the individual photos, then registering the composite only should work. http://www.photoattorney.com/protection-for-your-derivative-works/
