Ring-necked Duck (Aythya collaris)
Crandon Park, Key Biscayne, FL, on 8 Dec 2003

Last Sunday I had planned to meet George DeCamp and Alex in the Everglades. George could not get from Long Island to Florida because of the snowstorm, and I developed flu-like symptoms and cancelled. All day long Alex kept calling me about the new ducks that had flown into Crandon Park. Knowing he was needling me, I still became jealous.

The next morning, Kleenex and asthma spray in hand, I snuck down to Key Biscayne and fell in love with a single Ring-necked Duck that had arrived about one week earlier. I never had encountered this species. Despite the Hooded Mergansers and Wood Ducks, I stayed with this friendly creature for nearly three hours. He posed readily and actually followed me around the pond. My usual favorite, a Red-crested Pochard, became so upset with my inattention that he kept walking in front of the RND and flapping his wings. What fun.

Though the day was dreary and lighting was poor, my flash and high ISO setting allowed me to shoot freely. The image you see was taken during a brief period when the sun cooperated. The iridescence on the head and the neck ring are apparent.

Thanks for looking. Comments, critiques, and reposts are welcome.

Hiya Sandy---the ring-necked duck is a frequent flyer in my part of the country. It's difficult to get this kind of detail because they keep their distance; it's great to see this. Noise Ninja?? What next?

I'm so glad you got down there for the ducks....you know how Alex is. Ring necked ducks are beautiful.....and this one has certainly given you an interesting pose. I can hardly wait to see some more shots of these guys. I just wish that there were some up here....well at least that you could get closer than a mile to see. An excellent image...unique....and perfect.

What a beauty.

You are amazing. You make the 400DO + 2X TC look like it is supposed to.

He sure is giving you the eye.

Sandy, I told him not to make you walk around too much since you had a head cold, I am glad he listened by following you around!!, How you are going to make it up to the Pochard that's another matter, Ducks are just like women!!, When you pay too much attention to one, the other ones get pissed off !!!!
BTW, The Mergansers asked me to tell you that they are still waiting for you, just like a lover, you are going to have to try a little harder to have your way with them, they are not going to be easy !!!!

Beautiful Sandy. I love the curve of the neck and head against the backgound and of course, the eye.
