Northern Gannet Parc National de L'ile-Bonaventure, QC, Canada

Canon EOS 1DMKII, 70-200 F2.8 @ 200mm no flash was permitted.
ISO 1000 F5 @ 1/640s Full Frame.

The need for park services to control access to nesting sites often intrudes on photographers abilities to be creative. On L'ile-Bonaventure, visitors are permitted access to the island via private boats with landing permits that restrict them to limited hours. The first boat out leaves at 10:00 and lands on the island at 10:45. Visitors must leave the nesting site by 16:00 in order to catch the last boat out at 17:00. I had to get pretty creative to make this image

Amazing pose and approach. Dang, I wish they let you use flash. I have never seen a gannet in this outstretched wing position before. You may be breaking new ground here.

Beautiful image of a bird I have never seen before. Nice comp and amazing facial shot.
I would perhaps darken the one bright cloud patch above and to the right of the bird.

Awesome capture

Not my favorite gannet image of yours but still very cool Chris! You said be brutal so...
I love the pose but wish the bird was a little brighter. What I love so much about gannets is their beautiful white body with that golden orange coloring on their head and those brilliant blue eyes with the black outline. With this image being darker, you kind of lose that. I'm guessing with using such a high ISO you wouldn't be able to recover using SH. It's still beautiful though with that pose and those purple and pink colors!

The pastel colors are nice here though I agree with Steve that I wished they let you use flash. Oh well, you've done a great job without it. I wonder if you can brighten up the bird a little bit selectively. I think that would improve this a little. Nice work, Chris! :D

Chris,

The pose is awesome. As others have said, more light on the bird might improve the image, but I don't think you could have done any better with the conditions you had to work with. The clouds in the background add some interest to the image.

Surely using flash (or brightening up the bird too much) in a situation like this, looking into the `sunset`, would result in a somewhat artificial look? I find this a beautiful, and very natural-looking, picture, as shown!

very, very ,very nice chris. My nits have been mentioned. The sky adds to this a lot. I like fight shots with something in the sky to give reference, picture depth, and interest. Great wingspan.I feel a tug on my wallet with this one.

Love it, Chris.... wish for an intact tail rather than a tatty one, but boy it sure rocks. What is with his foot?

Great catch, Chris. The muted tones of this shot are really nice, IMHO.
