Osprey. Pandion Haliaeyus.

Sept. 7, 2005

This osprey had been making me a little nuts. Twice he flew within twenty feet of me with a fish when I was setting up. Once I had my rig ready I never saw him again. I arrived at the San Diego river bed and did not see him so was going mudding. Mike Wilson pulled up just as I locked my truck and shouted, "There he is... here he comes." We bolted a hundred yards and the osprey flew right over us, dropped into the river for a fish, and flew back over our heads. I used my Mark 2, hand held, with the 500f4 at f5.6, 1/3000th sec, ISO 250, hand held meter. I wish the light had been lower but I have not seen him feed that late in the day.

Outstanding Steve,

The eye contact and "clutch" detail is killer!

I too wish the light had been better for you, but atleast you got the shot! Sometimes they frustrate you like that!

Terrific image Steve... especially given the conditions. Wilson is a great "spotter". Yea, those darn Ospreys don't like to fish around here when the light is good either! 8)

This is good. No, it's great! You handled the light well and the detail is wonderful. I'm actually envious.

The eye makes it for, along with the fish of course, Steve.
