I haven't posted on here before, though I've lurked for a while. I thought I'd post a little bird to start :D
Image
Cactus Wren
Outside Phoenix, AZ
Canon 20D, 400mm f/5.6L@ 5.6, 1/2000, ISO 800 (handheld)
Full Frame

I was standing about 12 feet from the cactus shooting a starling flitting in and out of an abandoned Gila Woodpecker nest that it had squatted in. This wren just landed on the cactus and I had time for 2 frames before he took off. This was the better frame.

Ed, a shot of a Cactus Wren on a cactus with blue sky, sure is a real treat. It would be better if the angle up at the bird were not quite so steep, but sometimes that can't be helped. Nice job with your first post, and welcome to NSN, I hope I get to see some more of your work. :D

Nice shot Ed! I agree w/ Mike, but you did the best you could in this situation. There's a little dust spot abive the bird's bill near the top

Thanks Michael and Chris. As for the dust spot, that's very odd. I see it now too, but the original and other sized versions of this image do not show that spot. Add to that the fact that it was taken at f/5.6 makes me think I slipped up with a brush at some point when I was reducing this - only I didn't use a brush for anything but the watermark. Hmmmmmmm. I basically did no pre-processing on this. I think I'll revisit it and modify the image when I get home. I noticed that I've used an 8x10 aspect ratio before in other versions (too big for this forum) where I did a bit more tweaking. I'll revisit this and probably modify the image later nonight.

Thanks again and thanks Chris, for pointing out that spot!

Very nice first Ed. I really like these birds too and the blue sky is great. I would crop a bit off the right side.

Mike, as I said in my previous response, I usually crop this to 8x10 aspect which would conform to your suggestion. I just didn't for this post - why? I'm not sure. :)

I'll modify the file later when I get home and indicate this in the topic.

A nice grab shot and welcome to the Forum, Ed!
Looks like you have plenty of light to lower the ISO setting hence less noise ...

It's definitely a good grab shot. A lower angle would be nice but then you shoot 'em where they land. Welcome to NSN and posting!!!
