1D Mark II, Canon 500 f-4, X1.4 TC, 1/1000, f-8, iso 320, handheld

This is my first flight shot with my new Canon 500 f-4+x1.4 TC.
Took it two days ago in late afternoon.
Any comment regarding the photo and/or handholding the Canon 500 would be greatly appreciated...

Fine flightshot of a species I'm not familiar with (Hardhead is that the name of the species?); very sharp where it needs to be!

Hi Herman, thanks for your comment! yes, Hardhead is the name of this duck. It is also called White eyed Duck as the males have white eyes like the one in the picture.

You've done a good job here and your handholding is good (keep that shutter speed up above the 1/1000th and you'll be fine.

Hi Ofer,
Looks good to me. I just recently "downsized" from a 600 to a 500, with the idea that I could handhold it for flight shots. If you want some good tips on handholding, check out Jim Neiger's posts in the Photo Essays forum. In his http://www.naturescapes.net/phpBB3/view ... jim+nieger post Jim gives some excellent tips on handholding. I got the same setup (belt and pliers holder) Jim mentions for less than $20. It works wonderfully for handholding.

Looks pretty good I'd say, Ofer!
Have you done some comparison shooting flight shots with tripod and Wimberely Head?

A fine shot. The 1.4 makes the 500 (and every other Canon lens) dog slow for flight shots IMO. Well executed.

Welcome to the club Ofer :) :) :)
You did great!!!!!
As mentioned, high shutter speed is key factor in hholding the beast. Soon you will find the most comfortable and steady way to hold it as you shoot.
Ver well done
