Turkey Vulture Cathartes aura
Santee Lakes 4-22-05

It rained off and on all afternoon and I spent most of the time in the car waiting for it to stop to do some shooting. About 1/2 hr before sunset, one of the employees there told me there was a TV at lake 3 and I hadn't seen one there for a month or so. I drove over and found it sunning in the last bit of light of the day and it turned out it wasn't going to be an unproductive day after all.
D70, Tamron 200-400 at 250mm, 1/800, f/7.1, ISO 320, handheld and shot through sunroof.

An excellent image of this difficult bird to photograph. The head is usually ill-defined, but not so here. Great job, Mike.

very nice! the wing spread, and well shown head works well..

the background is a bit noisy, which could be from jpg compression, or from when you sharpened the bird..
a bit of blur, or masking on that(to mask out the sharpening effect in that area) would help

nice shot

It looks like he's saying "they went thataway"! The sweet light really helps bring out all the detail in this dark bird. Sweet shot of a not so sweet bird.

Larry and I shot a couple TKs at Bolsa Chica on a slow day a few months ago and decided that they were so butt-ugly that there wasn't a way to make them look good... You just proved us wrong Mike!

Great behavioral shot of this guy. And as Sandy said.....the head is clearly defined. Gotta love those colors.
