Great Gray Owls - Courting Norhtern Ontario, Canada
1DMKII, 100-400 @120mm ISO 250 1/1000s@F6.3 Handheld.
Cropped to pano.
While photographing Great Gray Owls with Eleanor Kee Wellman last week in northern Ontario, we witnessed some pretty amazing behavior. There doesn't seem to be much photographic material of this behavior available.
I have posted several other images in the ESSAY forum.

Please post a comment - it's how I learn!

Chris, this and the others are simply fantastic! I would question though that this is courtship. I would suspect it to be a scuffle over food and one claiming dominance. I've seen this before in MN... but haven't captured it nearly as well as you have. This doesn't take anything whatsoever away from this dramatic image and I stand to be corrected but most courtship will take place to the north on their breeding grounds once the birds make it through this winter.

This is great, Chris. I've never seen this behavior before. In fact I've rarely seen interactions from this species.

Im thinking the males is on the left, it looks a little smaller to me.

CARPEDIEM... you've seized the day big time with this capture, your patience, luck and skill all played part in that series. Was nice to seem it in print too. Thanks again for everything. Really, the crop works, the exposure is great... I can't even try to personally make anything negative. Just wonderul man. Have fun with the eagles in Alaska!

Beautiful behavior shot and it seems like you were able to get pretty close to them when shooting...it sure looks chilly!

Shots like this are what makes standing out in freezing weather worth it. A glimpse into their world. Simply excellent.

Chris

Not only a fantastic image but perhaps an important image for understanding behavior going on here. Best wishes with finding out more about this and with your Alaska trip. Thanks for everything on our Isle Bizard shoot.

Amazing! Your photo essay is wonderful as well. I hope to get the chance to photograph some Great Grays later this week, and will be happy with something half as good as this!

Great Job!
