Heermann's Gull Larus heermanni
La Jolla Jan. 04

Here's another image I have of a Heermann's, only this time in its first plumage. Quite a bit different from the bird in my last post. The original was a vertical cutting off the tail so I cropped this to a portrait. I like the early morning sidelight on this bird. Cropped 40%.

A nice photo---love the complementary colors and that Provia blue. This species is so interesting for the duskiness and smoky tones. Have never seen this plumage---are the feathers on the head very, very fine?

Excellent portrait Mike... isn't it interesting how elegant even a relatively plain bird can be? I'm hoping to make a trip down your way in the next couple of weeks, the Pelicans here aren't as colorfull or plentiful at BC as they were last year!

I love your composition here and thanks Mike for teaching me more about gulls and their different plumages...Gulls are challenging for me to id correctly.

Woa, they are as cool looking as juveniles than as adults. Beautiful shot Mike.

Mike,

In addition to a beautiful bird, the light and the background make this an excellent portrait.

Amazing what changes a little time makes. You sure had nice light (I think I must live in a cave because I can't remember what sunlight looks like any more!). Nice choice in the cropping....and such wonderful detail. Always a treat to see what you can come up with!

Excellent portrait Mike--great cause I'm always drawn to the full adult Heerman's. I'm going to head back down in a few weeks.

Nice Post, Mike. You don't often see images of the young gulls. Congrats on capturing AND posting this image. The sky is REALLY intense.
