Today we had seven around the feeder. Some goes to the water to drink, others eat some snow instead.

This is so unique with the Redpoll down in the snow. And the detail and sharpness is excellent. The spot of red on the crown is awesome. Well done, Karl.

An interesting behavioral trait of Common Redpolls is to burrow into the snow in order to stay warm at night. This very nice image of the Redpoll eating snow for water reminded me of it's burrowing trait because it looks like it's coming out of a tunnel. Needs to be clicked to get the full effect of the fine detail in this excellent image.

Wonderful image, Karl! It looks like its snuggled down and wrapped up warmly in a soft, down quilt - sadly, we know its out in the freezing cold snow!

Perfect color and detail in this image Karl, you have a lot more snow there then we do at the moment here in nw Alberta. I used to shoot them at a feeder in my backyard but too many cats hanging around and terrorizing the birds .. so no more photography for me.

As I said, wonderful image, do you get better results with the Sony body with the Nikkor zoom than with your D500 (I think you have a D500?) or other Nikon body. Perhaps it is the silent shutter of the mirrorless not spooking the birds?
