There is a discussion thread on this combo that some said was terrible. I think it is a reasonable travel lens.
I also have several editor picks here using the Nikon 1.7tc which I think is really good.

New to the forum but my $.02 is that the equipment always plays a part, but the person behind the camera is the most important element in almost every shot. Looks like good work to me.

Beautiful shot of this lovely pair, Dan. Great results with this combo. I have a version of the Nikon 1.7X that I love as well. However, I know that many do not agree.

Dan,
From usage, I believe the new 1.4 tc is better than the 1.7. I believe the new 70-200 is better than the previous version. Curious if you have taken a static image for comparison between the 1.7 and 1.4? I also believe the 70-200 with a tc is underrated. I prefer the 70-200 with a tc to the 500 pf. This is a very nice image with excellent details.

Gene, this image was taken in 2014. It was taken on the 70-200vrii, I think the latest version. While it is not ideal, I think it is a
nice travel lens if you already have the 70-200 and cannot afford to get a big lens or the 500pf.
The 1.7 I use with the 300 f2.8 and it is better than the 500 pf which I also have and is very good.
Most all stuff in the last several years is good, no one has to rush to buy the latest, go shoot good subjects in good light...
I have the new 1.4 which I use with the 300 f2.8 and and the 500pf. It works well.

Its all been said, Dan. Its not only the equipment, but who is using it - and in your case that means we're going to see a quality image, as we are with this one! A beauty!
