Golden-hooded Tanager, Costa Rica

D1x, 600f4, 1.4x, iso 200, 1/80, f5.6, (-1), SB800/BB (+0), full frame.

I set up my camera while trying to not frighten this bird and did not realize my iso setting was 200. Comments/critiques welcome.

This is a sweet image, Jerry. A little more USM will put it over the top. :)

Killer bird, and a perch that even Alan would like!!, The colors are amazing, camera blur is ever so obvious due to the extreme focal length and the slow shutter speed used, Long glass technique is a must plus the nerves of a sharp shooter could also help!! Congrats!! 8)

Jerry,

Would this be the same bird I saw in Guatemala that I labeled "Masked" Tanager? Looks the same.

Anyhow, must've been pretty exciting to have this in your viewfinder, after the initial panic of trying to get set up in time :).

Is USM really what this shot needs? To my eye the "softness" looks like a small amount of motion blur. ??

All the elements of this photo look good !

Agree with all above. The bird is so pretty it does not look real.

Mike, I was told these birds used to be called golden masked tanagers but that was changed because the mask is black and surrounded by blue. Some people started calling these masked tanagers and others golden hooded tanagers. I am going by Stiles classification but I realize some of his names are out of date.

I regret the softness of the photo and attribute it to my technique as I was hurrying to get the photo. I learned a lesson with this photo - make haste slowly.

Jerry:

I love the colors, the perch, the suspicious look in the bird's eye, and the background. Wish it were sharper, and that the tail were visible.

Jerry,

You're getting me all nostalgic. The nits have been mentioned. I saw these guys often around Arenal. They frequented a bush outside my balcony, unfortunately at that time I was just a lowly birder and not a photographer. I look forward to more shots, keep 'em coming.

Great pose and colors on this one. They seem to favor semi-open areas and seldom perch high, but in my 2 weeks in C.R. last month I never had one in the viewfinder. I'm envious of this photo!
