Honeymoon Island, FL - Canon 20D, Canon 500mm, hand held, 1/3200, F5.6, ISO 400, manual

On Wednesday afternoon I went to Honeymoon Island in Dunedin, FL, with my wife. It was a beautiful afternoon and we wanted to hike on the nature trails there. Naturally, I brought my camera so I could take advantage of any photo opps that came along. My wife was walking down the trail about 30 yards in front of me looking up at an Osprey perched in a nearby tree. I looked down the trail and noticed something lying in the path just in front of my wife. I quickly yelled for her to stop, because I realized what it was. It was the largest Eastern Diamond Back Rattlesnake I have ever seen. It was enormous. I'm estimating that it was about 7-8 feet long, and the wide part of it's body was about 5-6 inches in diameter. This was one big snake. My wife was amazing! She wasn't afraid at all and simply stood still and watched the snake slowly make it's way across the trail. I took this shot on my way to join her. When I got to where she was, I couldn't take any pictures, because we were too close and my lens wouldn't focus. My wife had stopped about 8 feet shy of where the snake was. If I hadn't noticed it and yelled for her to stop, she likely would have stepped on it. By the time I realized I needed to back up to get more pictures, the snake had made it's way into the scrub next to the trail. This was the only shot I got. It was cropped from horizontal.

This was a big thrill for me, because I am a real snake lover. I have had several pet snakes throughout my life and have always been interested in them. I have seen Diamond Backs at reptile shows, and I have seen dead ones lying near the road, but this was my first live one in the wild. It really made my day. Thank god my wife didn't step on it!

WOW!! What a story. I am glad your wife didn't step on it either. Good job getting one shot of it anyway. Thanks for sharing your picture and your story.

Great story and nice shot Jim. Good thing you saw the D-back--I would have thought they are hibernating at this time of year but maybe not in the warmer Florida weather.

Good work Jim. Pulled off a nice shot despite tough light and a nervous situation.. The story was great. Thanks for coming by Wildlife..
