I guess this one qualifies as a motif, he's around 18 months old or so.

We found this pride of seven on a regular basis most days. This particualr day we found them about an hour before sunset. We parked up nearby and just sat with them. There were three young ones and they had started to wake up before the elders.

This male was laying down behind a tuft of grass when we arrived. After a few minutes the curiosity got the better of him and he crawled over and poked his head through the grass to see what we were.
I managed to get two shots off. I looked up to see just how close he was and maybe take off the 1.4x, looked back through the viewfinder but couldnt get focus again.
He'd moved. Where ? His head was six inches below my lens
No kidding. He'd walked right up to the vehicle and sat down underneath where my lens was hanging over the side. This is probably not that scary, but take a look at the Land Cruiser that we were sat in. I was kneeling in the footwell immediately behind the driver with the lens resting on a beanbag over the side.

A very special moment. Even more so for Carol...

Carol, I especially like the eye contact in this one. And, the natural look of the image with the surrounding vegetation.

Best,

ROFL!!! I've never seen a domestic cat eat 40 pounds at one sitting or take down a couple hundred pound animal. Glad he wasn't curious about how you tasted!

Tightness and intimacy make the shot. Love the head-on gaze and little roll of skin up against the grass on the right.

Wow! The picture is awesome and the story only adds to it. No doubt you and Carol will remember this guy for some time to come. 1/20 of a second- you just have to love IS (sorry Nikon shooters )!

I love the way he's peeking out from the grasses, and the tight crop with the intimate eye contact. He truly does look like an inquisitive kid. A very powerful image.

This was indeed an amazing experience to be so close to a completely wild Lion in an open topped Landcruiser. I was sitting in the seat behind Dave, right against the side of the vehicle. This Lion came right up to where I was sitting and crouched down looking into my eyes. I sat perfectly still with him just two feet away from me while we 'bonded' as occasionally happens with wildlife. He then sat leaning against the side of the vehicle right by my leg. I could have put my hand on his head - but needless to say I didn't. After a few moments he got up, looked at me again and returned to the rest of the pride. The guide and driver in the front of the Landcruiser had eyes the size of soup plates by this time!!

What a truly memorable and breath taking experience!! 8)
