Moose (into the Rut)

These is from one of the few opportunities I had in Denali early this month, This spot is just prior to getting to the entrance of the park in which no private vehicles are allowed, This part of the road is also paved and it also happen to be were the Moose congregate during the rut!!, A lot of grunting and mock fighting with trees goes on, marking the place with urine is also part of the ritual, given this opportunity I looked for the best light and shot away, one of the few happy photographic moments from Denali!!!
D1x, Raw format, Lens=70-200mm afs-VR f/2.8-2.8, FL=175mm, Incident metering, 1/400sec SS-f/10, EV-1/3, ISO=400, WB=Auto, No Flash.
Any and all comments welcomed!!

Excellent shot - you were a heck of a lot closer than I ever want to get to a Moose again.

Fall colors are super here. YIPES 70-200, sharing air with moose, not good. BTW: what do you think of the new VR. Pretty nifty lens, hey..
Thanks for another great post in FFM, Alex, really enjoy your work.

I wish the eye was not in the center of the picture. A crop on the left would easily solve that. Lots of contrast, especially on the antlers, but its a good exposure with some detail in the hottest spot.

Alex, if you pass through Anchorage in the fall again, let me know. I've found a couple of pretty good place to shoot. (You can judge for yourself when I post a few more shots.) The place were Authur Morris took his recent post is easily accessible with a good population of nice bulls. And they're habituated to people; I was shooting my 70-200 most of the time during the past 3 outings.

EJ, there was a 4x4 SUV between us, besides he was target locked on a female just across the road, on these large animals I always keep an eye on the mood of the animal and what he is focused on!!

Very nice! Great colors and composition. The only nit for me is the twig in front of the critter's nose, which could probably be cloned out if you were going to print this. Glad there was an SUV between you and those horns!

Nicely done. Love the complementary background colors. Glad to hear that he had a female on his mind given your closeness!

I would like to have seen this with a little wider aperture to reduce the depth of field - that would help make the moose stand out from the background a bit better.

Excellent. Color, sharpness, textures, no shadow on the eye. Great shot.

Great composition and colours Alex and lovely golden light all give the appearance of a painting to this sweet shot.

Nice one!
