Kodiak Bear

This is the last thing you want to see when photographing these bears, a glance towards the camera noise, the wind had died down and the shutter click was heard by this young Bear, At this age Grizzlies are called Hooligan because they are at the most troublesome stage on their life, I don't know if this term applies to Kodiak Bears, Maybe this one is a Kooligan!!!
Not knowing what the noise was, he made a bee line towards our hiding place at full speed, little did I know it was a false charge just to startled the opposition, whatever it was!!, I was too busy taking cover to press the shutter, so no images of this action was captured, It is impressive to see that muscle mass take flight as if it was a bird, close to 500 lbs of pure energy coming towards you at 40 MPH, I was lucky to have some spare diapers at hand!!!, Once he realized we were humans he back tracked at the same speed towards the tall grass!!
D1x, Raw format, Lens=70-200mm afs-VR + 2X Teleconverter, FL=400mm
Manual exposure, 1/500sec-f/6/3, EV=0, ISO=200, WB-Auto, No Flash
Any and all comments welcome!!

He is definitely giving you 'the look' Alex. I can understand why the diaper change was necessary when he came charging toward you. I am glad you survived to tell us about it and share this very nice image.

This look alone would have sent me packing. The squinty eye sure gives him character!

Yikes!!! The power of this 'Kooligan' is clearly evident. I'll do without a charging shot, thank you. Glad you found cover and survived, mi amigo bueno. :D

This guy has a flexible nose! Your bear images show a lot of individual personalities very well. That 70-200 is a honey of a lens. Maybe that's what drew his attention.

The look on the face would have been a real concern to me! Doesn't look friendly. It's the asymmetry in the face that really captures attention here. Well done - as usual!

Carl, We camped for two nights and shot one whole day, millions of black flies, muddy/flooded bear trails, hiding in plain sight , very long and exhaustive walks and a very long day, The sun was out for most of the day but I could not change my shooting angle, We was 49 bears in one day, about 10 up close while they fished, An armed guide is a must otherwise it could be dangerous, most of these bears have never seen a human, it is such a remote place in Kodiak!!, Hope this helps!!

Really nice, Alex. He'd sure be enough to scare me off.
Is he beginning to get a white ring around his neck?

Nice shot Alex. There aren't many thrills in life like being bluff charged by an Alaskan Brown Bear  I have an image somewhere that maybe I'll scan of a rather small bear that made several fairly close passes at me.

Tom, It looks that way, this particular animal is a sub-adult, maybe 3-4 years old, I saw some females with beautiful wide blond collars around their necks, but not all have them!!!, Hope this helps!!!
