Clouded Leopard
Captive
EOS300D, Sigma 100-300 F4 + 1.4TC, ISO 200, f5.6, 1/40 -1. 550EX -1.

This Leopard is very rare and so different from the other Leopards. The head is a different shape, the markings are quite unique, with large cloud shapes on the body and stripes on the neck, and the legs are short and muscular. The eyes bore right into you, and they have the longest canine teeth in any of the big cats, giving them a striking resemblance to the extinct Sabre Toothed Tiger. I hope Dave will post his shot of this male showing those amazing teeth!!

They are a primitive killing machine, and one of the reasons why they are so rare, apart from the destruction of habitat and hunting for their skins, might have something to do with the fact that the males have a habit of killing the females by ripping their throat out.

All comments and critiques always welcome and appreciated and thanks for looking.

That would certainly reduce mating opportunities!

Great shot. Love the whiskers. Best though is that it really looks like it's in its natural habitat, both with the background and with the light.

This is awesome Carol... I love the crouched position with the leaves framing the edge of the image. The eyes are something.. do they have a lighter color on the iris all the way around the periphery? Amazing experience and photo. Thanks for the biology lesson....

Thanks Dennis, and yes, the eyes have this fascinating appearance with the lighter rim area and as I said, they really do bore right into you - far more than any of the other Leopards.

I like the sneaking out of the foilage feel to this one. Very wild looking shot to my eye. Love the whiskers too.

Wow Carol! The nice part about this is that you managed to make this look like it was taken in the wild.

Wow, I'm glad he's not looking at me with those piercing eyes. The composition with the vegetation and rocks is just wonderful. Thanks for the biology lesson of this unusual cat!
