Hello NatureScapers...

A friend of mine that knows I really like turtles brought this western painted turtle to me. His daughter found this turtle frozen next to her mailbox last November. She thought that it was dead but brought it inside to thaw and out of hibernation it came. I am not sure it would have survived on the ground, out of a pond. The right rear limb is missing most of the foot and toes and I am not sure if this a result of freezing or an encounter with another animal. At that time the turtle was about 1cm across. She fed him worms through the winter and in the spring by transfer of hands it ended up with me. He (?) needs to gain a fair amount of weight and is very light, but we are watching the little guy grow and I am hoping that he will be fit enough, despite his foot, for release again into a pond.

While he is gaining condition, I tried to make a few pictures of him in his little two gallon fish tank.. I waited until he was swimming towards the lens and then made the shot through the glass. His current size is about 1.5cm and I believe he was born last summer. He is thriving despite his injury.. and can never seem to get enough to eat..

Thanks for looking and any comments or suggestions...

Cool picture, this little guy is cute. My Girlfriend is dragging me off to some turttle show this weekend in Arizona. I hope they understand it's just fill flash and nothing against them....LOL

Very cool shot and I love the colors. I'm confused as to why you needed a diopter in front of a 1:1 Macro lens.

Dennis, you really captured the intricate details of this little one. I think this might be the first photo I've seen of a turtle swimming.

Love this shot. Do you think it would grow bigger in a larger size aquarium? Also, does it swim in a gentle curve? Good luck to the turtle.
