Coyote - Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
EOS 1Ds, 70-200 @ 70mm, 1/400, f/11, ISO 200

I had a photography/nature experience I won't soon forget this morning. While shooting mountain scapes and wild flowers in the Moraine Park section of Rocky Mountain National Park, I spotted a Coyote in the distance. Since I was set-up for landscapes, the longest lens I had on me was the 70-200 zoom but I did have a 1.4x on. While I don't like using teleconverters on zooms, in this case I put it on in hopes of getting something and started slowly walking the quarter mile or so distance between me and the coyote leaving my tripod behind. The Coyote was making his way toward me and I could soon get rid of the 1.4x and proceeded to photograph this guy for at least a half hour. He came within just a few feet of me without a care in the world for me - he was looking for prey. After a while he laid down right in front of me. This shot was taken about halfway through in an attempt to include environment and the coyote. Hope you like it! If not, I have tons of other shots including full frame, verticals, etc, etc :)

Beautiful, EJ!

Close interactions with wild animals are never easily forgotten.

I've always found coyotes to be far to wary to approach--they tend to run off if spotted. I guess it depends on how much habituation they've had... For example, the elk in Elk Island will never hang around for a photo (unlike the bison/moose), but the ones in Jasper just ignore people. Bears that live near the roads in Jasper ignore people while bears I've encountered in the back country have always run away on sight...

Nice shot and great opportunity ! Like Guy (?) said recently, you've got to be out there pressing that shutter button - I've yet to see a coyote wander through my living room :(

Love the shot E. J. I hope to get out that way this summer. I also hope to apply for the Artist in Residence Program at the park for next year. Are you doing that this year?

Hey EJ,

One of your finest shots. More importantly, what a great experience that must have been, and I appreciate you sharing it with us. Fantastic!

Compositionally, I think you made a lot of good decisions here. Including the trees in the b/g on the LHS to frame the image works, and just the right amount of sky too. I think it might be even stronger just a tad tighter, losing a snippet from the bottom, and a tad from the RHS to balance out the ratio.

Are the b/g mtn ridges as sharp as you wanted them? Looks like you had the s/s to easily go f16 if necessary.

Great image man.

Cheers

Carl

They look very sharp on the full size file but working on a small laptop its tough to optimize the image for the web. I really didn't have any shutter speed to play with as I panning with the animal. A higher ISO is not an option on the 1Ds as even 250 is too noisy.

Sweet shot E.J. Great to see the environment as well as subject for a change - especially when the scene is so nice too! 8) 8) :)

EJ, I had a similar experiance in february at RMNP. I will for sure never forget it. Les, myself and my cousin were able to photograph a coyote for about an hour and it was for sure a great time. This is great showing the mountains and habitat.

EJ, are you going to make a large print of this? I think that would
be outstanding. The colors are very pleasing and one can just loose
themselves in this scene.

Cheers,
ben
