It seems a bit dark on my monitor, especially in the shadows.

Is this a recent shot? None of the elk I saw in Jasper the other day had antlers that far progressed. But we are a ways further north, so maybe things get started later. (Or maybe I only saw young bulls.)

I can see detail in the shadows on my flat panel monitor at work. I like the light on the antlers and the detail of the coat. It'd help if there was more light on the face and in the eyes. A slower shutter speed would allow for a more shallow depth of field to make that bull really stand out!

Love the velvet but that hair coat looks itchy! Technicals: Like the turn back across the frame..Is the catchlight in the left eye natural? Wondering because of the shadow across the eye from the antler..

I think this is a good image if you are trying to convey what the animals look like during this time of year. However, I have to agree with John Shaw when he say's "Would you want your picture taken if you looked like this?" I personally would prefer to see images of these animals when they are in their prime condition, which is usually in the fall during the rut.

I like this one a lot, primarily because it shows the environment.

Thanks for the comments all...Gee Todd I guess I will just stay home and wait until fall...or better yet go to the zoo and take pictures of CAGED animals and never go out in the wild again to take shots of wild animals!

Charlie, I didn't mean to offend you. I was merely giving you my opinion of this shot. I just happen to feel that if an image is going to be used as art or to convey beauty, then it should be taken at a time when the subject is in good condition. I haven't seen many images of wilted flower blooms lately. :)

Wouldn’t a wilted flower be a lot easer to get a picture of than a Majestic Bull Elk in the wild…I think so, so that’s why you don’t see many of them

I agree animals in prime condition are desirable and beautiful to the eye, but as a record of their condition at all times of the year, then this is an excellent image to show the changing coat and antlers in velvet.

Nice one Charlie! 8) :)

Charlie, perhaps, this image would not grace a calender cover, but images such as this do have merit in an editorial context and I for one would not pass up an opportunity such as this. I would prefer a bit more room around the subject to better balance it within the frame, and the shadow on the forehead is a bit of a distraction.

Keep'em coming

Best,

Chas

Very nice image-shaggy coat and all. I really like seeing the bull in velvet.
