Our local zoo has a very perky pair of river otters. This is from the same exhibit as the image in EHK, just the other side. The big glass front faces south and it's hard to avoid glare - so I placed the lens hood right against the glass in hopes of catching a dive.

It's not a portrait, and I know the animal is a bit blurry - but this is more to convey action and provide a connection to the subject. Nearly full frame - just trimmed about 10% off the edges to tighten the composition.

Strong composition, with the diagonal rocks and bubbles. It's a shame the otter's face is fuzzy. Have you tried Focus Magic (PS plugin)?

I always love the way air gets caught in their fur and continues to come out a bit at a time when they dive.

You are getting some terrific shots at your local zoo. I really like the action here and since motion is conveyed by the bubbles and water movement, the little bit of blur is acceptable to my eye. Thanks for sharing..

I don't think any more contrast enhancement is possible on the face without it looking odd. I will, however, be sure to try again...

Dennis:
Yeah - it's kind of an image farm that I can go back to on days when I'm at a loss for wild subjects. Plus it's a challenge to make a compelling image of a captive animal since one has to either put humans into it, or get really close up.

For me the zoo is a challenge, photographically. Honestly it would be far easier to drive the wildlife loop at Custer and have easy backgrounds...... some people arent into it because of the captive thing.. but I know where you're coming from... I like the otter high five with the child in EHK also..

Great water action and his little feet sticking out the back is very cute.

Good composition and motion. Too bad about the fuzzy face.

Excellent composition and action in this Matt. If only the face was sharper it would put this one in the next league!! 8) :)
