Grey (Atlantic) Seal (Halichoerus grypus) – Donna Nook, UK.

Canon EOS10D, 600/f4 IS + Gitzo 1548 + Wimberley Head.
Manual exposure mode f8, 1/100, iso 200, AWB
Full frame.

Photographed this seal pup in January during a weekend visit to Donna Nook with a group of photographers from the UK, The Netherlands, Germany and the US. The first day, when this shot was taken, it was cold and wet with a strong wind and pretty uncomfortable for humans. This seal pup emerged from the surf and made its way across the sand towards the place we had all left our gear. It was totally unconcerned by our presence roundabout and settled in the lee of a wall of Lowe Pro. I always feel especially privileged when I am able to share space, at close range, with animals like this.

Wonderful experience and photograph Phil. I like the symmetry, low angle and in your face view... Did you make any images at close range with F11? Thanks for posting..

I agree with Karen! I like the way the colour of the sand contrasts with the coat of the seal.

Phil, I love all the earth tones and ground level in your face pose.
