While driving along highway 1 from Los Angeles to the SF Bay Area last Sunday, I had the opportunity to visit the elephant seal beach north of San Simeon. There are many hundreds of these huge animals that have chosen to make this beach their home for the winter, not much more than 100 feet from the highway. This guy appeared to be the alpha male, occasionally fighting off other males that came too close.

The whole experience was most amazing, with easy access to the animals from the bluff almost immediately above where they lay on the beach. The presence of all the human visitors didn't seem to disturb them the least... My avatar was also happy to meet his cousins.

Unfortunately I did not have opportunity to stay for the golden light hours, so this was shot close to midday with just some coastal haze to soften the light slightly.

Please hammer on! Any kind of comment or critique most welcome.
Thanks for looking,

Anders

What, no cute alert! These guys sure got short changed in the looks department. :?

As you note, the lights a bit harsh, but still its a nice portait. The variation in the skin texture is amazing.

These guys intrigue me. I made to Ano Neuvo a few years ago and hope to get to this spot someday. Thanks for the post!

Bizarre looking animal if you ask me but a fine shot of the king of the beach! I almost didn't notice the part of the other one in the background. I think this says a lot for how to shot in a crowded area; get close! Good job.
