West Indian Manatee
Crystal River, FL
STL

I wanted to share a closer view of a manatee. This youngster kept swimming right up to me, nudging me and seemingly looking for attention. As you can see, the manatee has small eyes. This can be closed by use of a sphincter muscle. Manatees also have very little hair except for stiff bristles on the face.

Canon 10D with 17-35mm@17mm in EWA housing, ISO 400, 1/250@ 5.6, aperture priority, full frame. What may look like dirt on the sensor is backscatter (particles)in the water.

Wow! At 17mm! I'm jealous for the experience as well as for the shot.

Cheryl, thanks for sharing an unusual perspective on a most unusual animal. It must have been incredible to be this close.
