Going through some shots from Tanzania two summers ago in preparing for a trip this coming summer, I ran across this shot from the Ngorongoro Crater. There's really only one place you can get out, use the facilities, have lunch, etc. and it's by a small pond. As an elephant - totally wild and a real "tusker" - approached from the rear, I got back in the Land Rover and prepared for a couple of shots. What I didn't expect was to have a number of tourists (or you can fill in another word!) approach the elephant with P&S's! The guy walking away had just gone up, snapped a shot and then turned his back. I suspect the smartest animal in the photo is the elephant. He walked around the people and the vehicles and drank from the other side of the pond. (No one was hurt but the shot is full of potential Darwin award winners!)

A2E, 28-70, Kodak gold, exposure information unrecorded.

Unbelievable. Where are the guides or rangers that could have told these people to be careful? Good behavior shot!

This reminds me of what you frequently see in Yellowstone-tourists approaching the bison with P&Ss.

It never ceases to amaze me!! - I think the chief 'Idiot Award' goes to the guy who has turned his back on the Ele!!

All the others are certainly 'in his space' and this is one of the main reasons why we always try to go somewhere off the 'beaten track' in Africa so we can have a more personal experience with the wildlife. We certainly achieved that in the Okavango Delta this year, and we have just booked for Zambia next year.
