What a fascinating sculpture! Very different to the usual city artworks, Gavin. Well spotted. I understand its the boy Nello and his faithful dog Patrasche, who visited the cathedral on Christmas Eve and fell asleep, resulting in them both freezing to death.

Hopefully this story is just fiction in the book 'The dog of Flanders' written by Marie Louise de la Ramee in 1872. This marble statue was made by artist Batiste Vermeulen. I find it very moving.

I appreciate Carol's post, telling the tale. And the little boy is rather cute as an added element. I just realized that the paving is the blanket! What a wonderful , poignant sculpture. TFS!
