We are going to travel to Northern New Mexico. I know about Tent Rocks, but what else should be on a short list to see/photo?

In Grants: La Ventana Arch and El Malpais lava flow

Farmington: Bisti Badlands

Taos: Rio Grande Gorge

These are some areas I just dug up.

On my trip to NM I did not go to these northern locales. I dropped down to Bosque, the Valley of Fire and White Sands. Did pass a tarantula in the road across Valley of Fire, when I headed back north to Albuquerque. Backed up, helped it across and photographed it. I guess the tarantulas in the America SW are very docile. This one was. But please do not take my word for it.

Someone will chime in here with some great suggestions. I think I know who. Have a great time. I love the Land of Enchantment.

When are you going? Is this trip imminent or something you're planning for some time in the future?

Regardless, I definitely second (third?) Bisti. Depending on timing I might recommend the Santa Fe National Forest (in the general vicinity of Jemez Springs and Jemez Pueblo) and Valles Caldera National Preserve.

When am I going? In the morning, I fly there. We're going to be based out of the Albuquerque area and would like to make day trips for three days.

I knew it was who would know E.J.

And Bikinchris....you can pick up a few of those listed spots with short trips out of Albuquerque.  Here is a map that shows that.

I really liked Shiprock and Bisti (and Bandolier NM).

Going to be there this weekend...gotcha. Way too late for color in the forest (usually peaks in late September); probably not worth the trip to the Caldera either. Bisti's always great, but it's a pretty good haul from Albuquerque (roughly two hours each way).

Actually the Cottonwoods along the Rio Grande should just be starting to turn....

From the plane today, we could see trees just getting some fall color. It seems like we will have a good short trip and we'll have to return for a later date for Bisti.

I was referring to the Santa Fe National Forest.  Color up there (pretty much entirely aspens) should be long gone.

Yes about 3 weeks to late for that.

I live right by the Bosque in Corrales just outside of Albuquerque and the color is going on right now but not good this year. Trees are turning and then immediately the leaves are turning bronze drying up and falling off. This seems to be turn for most of New Mexico. I was at Bosque del Apache on Sunday and the same is happening there.

We drove to Santa Fe today and stopped at Tent Rocks. The trees along the creeks and rivers were a vibrant yellow. I guess those are cottonwoods?

Yup all the trees lining the Rio Grande in that part of the country are Cottonwoods.
