Shot this past Saturday at Playalinda Beach on the south side of Canaveral National Seashore.

Revised 2nd Posting: Figured I would try E.J.'s recommendation and remove the OOF area at top and post both. Do you think it is better?

Revised 3rd Posting: Added some gold back on top to balance the image as discussed below.

------------
Paul, Cindy and Neil,

Your thinking the same as I. You need some of the gold at top to balance the image. That is why I chose this one and cropped it into the pano to begin with (first post).

After trying E.J.'s recommendation (2nd post) I was missing the gold at the top.

So I have attached a third post with just a bit of the gold added. I think this makes for the most successful of the three versions.

Thanks to all for the comments. As always, they are very helpful in the learning process.

Comments welcome. Thanks for looking.

This is very cool! But for me I would prefer everything in focus.

PF,

Good point. Next time I will stop down more, increase speed and go to higher ISO and go for that effect. For this image at ISO 500 and f/18, 1/500 shutter speed was required. I cropped this as a pano to remove the upper and lower portions of the capture that are the most OOF. The central portion of the shot is in the len's DOF, however the sea was rolling pretty well that morning (swells 2 to 3 feet) so I think it is more a function of movement and slight blurring then being OOF. My critical review of the image at higher magnification indictes no portion is critically sharp so I think this confirms my thoughts.

In the viewfinder, 2/3 rds or more of the central portion of the image was in focus, but the final capture does not show that. Though it did not meet my initial visualization, I like the very graphic qualities of the image; the play on light and colors.

Having learned that 1/500 sec is too slow on this type of sea, a higher shutter speed will be used next time out. BTW, I shot this at 1000mm (1300mm on the 1DM2) so it is some distance off shore where the swell was great. I did not notice the size of the swells until later when panning with fishing Pelicans skimming the water closely. The would disappear behind the swells.

Thanks for the comments.

An interesting study in light. The OOF top detracts a bit in a shot like this.

Very nice abstract image, with great colors. Unlike the others, the slight OOF area at the top of the image does not bother me much at all.

The cropped version is much weaker. While I don't especially like the OOF, the image needs the balance in color at the top. You've got a delightful study in some dramatic shapes and light and learned alot for the next attempt when you encounter a magic scene like this.

This is very cool, I like the abstract patterns of color and light. I agree with Paul that the composition is stronger in the original image because of the color balance.

I'd like to see it cropped with just a tint sliver of orange right along the top. Just a couple of mm more than your repost. It is a very nice image :D

I like the liquid gold, but agree that it would have been even more appealing if everything was in focus
