Lewis Pass Tarn, South Island, New Zealand.
Canon EOS1DMKII, 90mm TSE, f16, 0.6 sec, tripod, mlu, cable, polariser.

I very nearly gave this place a miss, but talking to Danny (nzmacro) on the phone he reminded me how he'd told me he liked this area and Hamner Springs, so thanks to him I was here as the sun went down. I had been meaning to revisit Paparoa NP on the west coast as I hadn't got the eroded limestone formations in the rivers there on camera (a couple of broken ribs had slowed me down) about 6 weeks earlier, maybe next time, but I'm pleased Danny's suggestion put me in this place instead.

The light has gone from the incredible moss and lichen draped forest, hidden by the mountainside behind me to my left, and is only just skimming the tops of the mountains on the horizon.

I really think I need to try and get some more detail from that area, maybe some dodging and burning will do the trick, but I don't want to play around too much and alter the overall calm feel. Any suggestions?

REPOST
Just used some dodge & burn to lighten up the trees, a little more detail, just 10 minutes playing. Looks a little too false for me.

I don't know what detail might be in the shadows, but I really like this as is. Beautiful comp and the light kissing the peaks is sweet! I don't think I'd change anything, but might want to play with contrast in the mountain and boost a little and see what that looks like. Can't imagine it would improve, but worth a look.

i'm kinda curious what's in the shadows areas...because of the light greyish green looking things you can see...
but i'd have to see both side by side to decide if it looks better light or not..

looks darn good like this though ;)

Very nice mirror image Marshall. I kinda like it the way it is - lightening up the shadows might ruin the balance.

I like this just as is! I like just the hint of detail in the darker areas.

Marshall:

This is a lovely picture from one of my favorite countries.

Rather than dodging and burning, I suggest you apply the Shadow/Highlight tool to the shadowed areas. That will give you much finer control.

Jim
