The largest eastern US hairstreak. Found in southeast Florida and shot at an enclosed butterfly garden in central Florida.

20D, 100-400IS, 25mm extension tube, ISO 400, Manual mode, f8, 1/250, full flash, hand held, minor crop from left side.

Very nice Jim, ....... and man this is one "chunky" looking little guy! A beauty too!! :)
I do wish that the background was just a wee bit more OOF, as the white streak coming out of his wings distracts, ........ but not much though. Just my tastebuds talking I guess! :)

Fine shot, excellent perch. Boy am I jealous! These are endemic to Florida, I'd love to see one in the wild or in a butterfly garden.

Beautiful female Jim. I had opportunities to photograph these a lot when I lived in Florida. In 1980 there was a thriving colony on Key Biscayne. (see fig 461, Audubon Field Guide to the North American Butterflies.) The larvae are espeically striking, bright glossy red with yellow spots, look like candy :D
