Leslie and I are into adopting retired racing greyhounds, as we believe we can make a difference, as between 20,000 to 25,000 greyhound are euthanized each year. So we try to do our part by reducing that number.

Anyway, our good friend Kibo died back in July while we were in Africa. He was a great dog, loads of fun to play with, and he loved everybody he met. So I was rummaging through some photographs today, and thought I would post a photo of him. We would take out all of the retired greyhounds that had been adopted each Sunday morning, and let them run around a closed in soccer field. They have a blast. We put muzzles on them, because they are very competitive, and that is what they are used to. It is also to protect them, because if you have one over agressive dog, a small bit wound can turn out to be a big deal on a dog that doesn't have much fat to protect himself/herself.

Anyway, we are adopting our next greyhound next weekend. He is a beautiful brendel, and we are looking for African names for him right now.

Good on You Andy! We have 'rescue dogs' too and one of ours is a German Shepherd/Greyhound cross 8)

He looks a real beauty and this is a great shot and a nice one to remember him by. 8) 8) 8) 8)

Andy I saw a program on the Greyhounds a couple of years ago and had no idea what was happening. Cruelty in such a way should not be allowed.

Very sorry about your loss I know how it feels.

Good luck with your new family addition I am sure he will be all you expect and more :)

Sorry for your loss and all the best with your new adoption. The angle capturing his leap and muscles is wonderful. I had no idea of their muscles. Wow. Love those eyes, too.

Thanks, Al.

Actually, the only cruelty that I know of is with illegal rabbit hunting, which people place financial wagers on. Highly illegal, and they don't feed the dogs but once a week, so they can get the dogs hungry for the hunt. Just artocious, but not as widespread, thankfully. Most greyhound breeders are good people, and are in the business to do well financially. But adopting greyounds off of a track prevents them from ending up in the wrong hands or being euthanized.

Thanks for the kind comments, everybody.

Dog name: "Hintza" - the name of the ridgeback in one of Laurens Van Der Post's books about growing up in Africa. Mind you, I've forgotten what it means or even what language it comes from - probably Zulu ?

If I remember correctly, Hintza was the name of one of the tribal chiefs or kings in real life, but I am not sure if he was a Zulu or not.
