This is as bad as it can get. This is straight out of the camera. No sharpening, composition, underexposed and boring sky. So here's something to really work with to hone your image editing skills :D

That's pretty good Al :) . I'd be inclined to lighten up the trees and also crop out the tree frame right as it more of an obtrusion than a frame for the image IMO. I'll be my quickie redo and tell you what I did.

Okay...here's what I did and it took less than 10 minutes in total so it's really simple. Cropped to a vertical. Levels and used the middle level point to readjust the gamma. The sky was changed to an early morning sky by just using a gradient filter. Selective dodging was done to simulate highlights and the spot at the bottom of the tree was done by using the dodge tool to give the spotlight. The saturated a bit more and the sand was made a more neutral gray color by using the gray eyedropper in levels. There's a thousand ways to do this, it just depends on how you want to interpret the image and what your imagination sees :D

Wow, Harvey. Just amazing what you did with a shot I'd put in the delete file.

I have a lot of fun with the kids using the "filters" in PS and just playing around with some pictures. I thought I'd trying playing with this. First, cropped a narrow vertical shot of the tallest tree. Curves to increase blue and green. Shadow/Highlights to lighten shadows and darken highlights. Filter twist to get it to look like a wave. So here is your shot with the lead wave from Hurrican Charley coming in:
