Came across a Blandings Turtle yesterday while cruising through a nearby wildlife refuge. It conveniently paused for a few minutes in the last few rays of the setting sun, and while I was getting a few shots the local Deerflies jumped at the opportunity for a quick easy supper (me, not the Blandings). Nikon D70, Sigma 50-500 braced on car window.

From the angle, its hard to tell you were as high up as the car window. Excellent image, love the detail and light! :D

Something new for me! Great expression for a turtle. :P And nice, colorful photo. Is this a more or less common species in Minnesota?

Juli, These are definitely less common. Blandings are classified as "Threatened" in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and they are having problems throughout most of their range because of wetlands loss.

 The turtle is saying, "Well, I guess if I have to (cross the road), hoe-kay."

Manley, thanks for the info. Can you recommend a good sourcebook for this kind of info? Aside from a basic field guide (which I have) how would one know what species to seek or recognize in their part of the country? I recognize the more common species, but are there reptile and amphibian alerts like bird alerts when species are endangered?

Wonderful capture from your angle in the car.

This turtle is threatened in Illinois, too, due to habitat loss. A recent strip mall expansion was reconfigured to preserve a breeding area. Small victory.
