Ruddy Duck Bubble Display
by Greg Downing
Each year Alan Murphy and I do our Loons and More workshop in Canada and we always look for these fantastic ruddy ducks during our scouting. Ruddy ducks (Oxyura jamaicensis) are one of the stiff-tailed ducks; part of the Oxyurinae subfamily. Adult males have a rust-reddish body, a light blue bill, and a white face with a black cap. In some images you can see the black cap display as two small horns. To me, they are as cute as can be. The most fascinating thing about ruddy ducks is their unique bubble display which the male presents to the female during breeding season. In this display the bird raises its head and inflates a special tracheal sack-like diverticulum (only found in male ruddy ducks and both sexes of emus) and then slaps its bill against its chest and lets out a two-syllabled “raa-anh” call. This action of bill slapping against the inflated chest forces air out of the feathers and creates lots of bubbles in the water in front of the bird. It’s fantastic to see and hear in person. Photographed while wading into a shallow pond with tripod mounted EOS 1DX, 500/4 and 1.4TC. 1/1600, F8, ISO 800.

At White Sands National Monument, great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand have engulfed 275 square miles of desert, creating the world’s largest gypsum dunefield. The National Monument preserves a major portion of this unique dune field, along with the plants and animals that live there. The backdrop of the mountain ranges to the east and west makes the location even more scenic and offers truly unique photographic opportunities. We will photograph this surreal landscape for 3 full days.
